Performance Arts Center - Compton Community College District
Act with leadership and always with the client’s best interest in mind
The Performing Arts Center had been originally programmed in an older master plan. It was not integrated into the campus and was underutilized as a design feature. Collaborating with the District and the Architect, BRJ refocused the Center to be both a prominent campus entry feature, and a fully-integrated academic component of the remaining campus. BRJ then worked with the State to postpone the project funding rather than lose the State’s approval of the project outright because of accreditation loss by the District. The District now has the option of resuming the project in the future rather than reapplying for funding.
Description
Designed to provide both a learning environment for the College’s growing theater arts department and a cultural center for the surrounding community. The comprehensive complex includes both acting/performing and technical theater arts facilities. A 500-seat proscenium theater and a 99-seat black box theater promise to provide for a wide variety of performance and presentation styles. The large scene shop and costume shop, along with make-up and other actor and audience support spaces round out the theater arts portion of the building. Dance, Art, and Music classrooms are located in an adjacent wing of the new building.
