Utility Corridor
Building Relentless Progress
The second phase of underground work at Crafton Hills proved to be more difficult than the benchmarking first phase as construction ventured into previously undeveloped land. Unsuitable soil was found to be the norm and not the exception despite extensive test results to the contrary. Undeterred, BRJ coordinated with the Construction Manager, the designers, and the contractor to determine a successful reroute and avoid a complete stop in construction. BRJ’s quick action, coordination, and persistency ensured continued progress.
Description
Provided underground utilities at the eastern edge of the currently developed campus. The scope of the project included:
- new chilled water and hot water system distribution lines
- new equipment connections within existing facilities
- special coordination and safety systems for work areas within an active school campus
Challenges
This was an operating community college campus during the construction of this project, and the routing of distribution lines was along heavily used pedestrian and vehicular paths. The work of our team included management of the design process with a particular focus on providing the most effective final design solutions while maintaining full services and safe campus access for students, staff, and visitors. Our team worked collaboratively with campus personnel, the design team, the construction manager, and the contractors to ensure both a successful process as well as a successful completed project.
